Safety is top priority both at the Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) and DNVGL, especially considering the introduction of new technology. Nowhere else in the world has the introduction of large Li-ion batteries in maritime vessels advanced further than in Norway.
Grenland Energy is the first battery supplier to receive a certification from DNVGL in accordance to the latest set of rules from both DNVGL and NMA. The battery system construction inhibits a fire to spread inside the battery, an effect described in the industry as ‘propagation’. "We have decided to attack the issue at its core, rather than attempting to suppress the problem with complex systems", CEO Roman Stoiber explains. He adds that both DNVGL and NMA have shown great interest in the company’s solutions.
Unique safety features
Previously the technical team in Grenland Energy has worked with most of the available cell formats and chemistries and is familiar with their various challenges. By choosing cell type and design with safety as a top priority, desired safety features on system level are easier to achieve. CTO Dr. Lars Ole Valøen states that this makes it unnecessary to add intricate systems to deal with fault consequences.
Reduced fuel consumption and emissions
The battery system is designed for hybrid power supply on board of maritime vessels and will reduce CO2 emissions, as well as improve local air quality in harbor areas by reducing SOx, NOx and particles emissions. The pilot installation on board of the worlds’ first hybrid crane bulk carrier by ship owner Grieg Star will eliminate a CO2 emission corresponding to more than 100 cars, NOx emissions of 5000 diesel cars and particle emissions of 7000 diesel cars annually. This is achieved by close cooperation with Kongsberg Maritime, enhancing the power management system with a hybrid option. As a bonus, the more efficient crane operation will also reduce the mooring time.

Grenland Energy is based in Norway, Herøya Industrial Park and has received great support during the development and design phase for this product from Innovation Norway. "We have seen great interest in the market for our product and are convinced it will contribute to keep Norwegian maritime technology in the lead", Roman Stoiber concludes.
