Webinar - Safety of Aged Battery Cells

At WATTS UP 2023 in Rotterdam last March we had the pleasure to be informed by Preben Vie, senior scientist at the Institute for Energy Technology (IFE), about the effects of aging on the thermal stability and safety of battery cells. We were pleased to have him present to us an update on their groundbreaking research on the safety of aged VS new battery cells at this upcoming webinar.

Some of the conclusions from his presentation at WATTS UP were:

  • Safety of aged Li-ion cells depend strongly on ageing temperature and hence ageing mechanism

  • Even “safe” chemistries as LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) can become critical “unsafe” when aged

  • Information in slow charge and discharge curves can be used for diagnostic analyses through differentiation

  • dQ/dV tracking can possibly be used for early detection of safety hazardous cycling/ageing conditions
