Course Details
The course on handling fires in lithium-ion batteries is provided by OilComp from Norway. They have developed the course based on the experiences from the fire and subsequent explosion on the ferry MF Ytterøyningen in 2019 in Norway. OilComp and Bergen Fire Department hosted a "state-of-the-art" seminar with the country's leading experts in January 2020. Using the knowledge gained, OilComp and Bergen Fire Department, in collaboration with Corvus Energy and Siemens Energy, created a two-day course (e-learning and digital class) to provide participants with fundamental knowledge on prevention, function, operation, risk, and emergency measures for lithium-ion battery fires.
Since 2020, they have conducted this course for fire brigades across the country and for various ferry and offshore companies in Norway and abroad with positive feedback. Companies like Solstad Shipping, Tidewater, Boskalis Seadrill, Østensjø, and many others have participated. Coastal fire brigades, which must respond to incidents, have also taken the course to enhance their knowledge of lithium-ion batteries on ships.
Schedule
The course consists of 2 parts, a basic part which will be conducted online, at your own schedule. And an advanced part, which will be in-person in Amsterdam on the 17th of June and led by an instructor from OilComp. Their instructor is an electrical engineer, ship electrician, former Siemens battery service engineer, and active firefighter with the Bergen Fire Department. He has been involved in our lithium-ion project from the beginning and is well-versed in the procedures and working methods of both fire brigades and shipping companies.
Basic Course (E-learning):
Duration: 6 teaching hours, completed individually on a PC/mobile/tablet.
Provides an introduction to lithium-ion batteries, basic electrical concepts, and battery systems on board ships.
Prepares participants for the advanced course and serves as a reference.
Advanced Course (Instructor-led):
Duration: 1 day, 12:30-17:30, in-person in Amsterdam
Builds on the e-learning material, focusing on risk assessment and handling incidents, with insights from real-world cases.
We recommend the course for all safety personnel on board, including fire and smoke diving teams, and relevant shore-based positions.
