MBF Ship Register

In 2016, the MBF saw a need for a register covering the number of ships with batteries. Since then, the MBF ship register has been the go to source for this information. Battery statistics are primarily compiled from project information received directly from battery suppliers and system integrators. Information about projects are shared periodically, which is reflected in the statistics on the first business day every month, or in some cases earlier when updated information is received. Not all makers share their data and not all makers share data every month. The number of ships with batteries are increasing and it is exciting to see the movement in the maritime battery market. Today, our ship register is shared on the member area and through the DNV Alternative Fuels Insight platform.

Growth of Battery Fleet

The MBF ship register contains data from many different ship segments from small ferries to cruise ships and from tugboats to container vessels. The ship register does not include small leisure boats. The statistics contain information on many different aspects such as the ship type, types of batteries installed, battery sizes, suppliers, integrators, shipyards, area of operations, type of propulsion configuration, and more.

In 2023 the ship register welcomed it’s 1000th battery powered ship and this number continues to rise. Not only does the total number of battery powered ships increase, also the number of different types of ships using batteries keeps on growing, as well as the installed battery capacity per delivered ship. This rise in demand has sparked the interest of an increasing number of maritime battery suppliers. The development of different types of maritime battery systems, for different types of applications, improved battery performance and lower battery prices are pushing the adoption of maritime batteries even further.

Available Battery Technology

Hybrid Vs Pure Electric

Not all ships are suitable to be powered by batteries only with the currently available battery technologies. However, batteries are very well suitable to reduce fuel consumption in hybrid systems, reduce maintenance costs, increase operational safety and redundancy, and enables zero emissions operations as well as other zero emission technologies. Therefore, most of the battery powered ships in the world are using the batteries in a hybrid propulsion system. With an increase in availability of shore power there is also an increase in plug-in hybrid ships to reduce emissions even further. However, future developments in battery technology might be able to change this picture again.

Total Installed Capacity

The initial growth of the global battery powered fleet has clearly been pushed by the car and passenger ferries. However, different ship segments have discovered the benefits of installing batteries now too. The offshore industry (wind, oil, and gas), ro-ro cargo ships, cruise ships, fishing vessels and tugboats already have a significant installed battery capacity and continue to grow. Not to underestimate the potential of all types of cargo vessels, from container to bulk or tankers. The second largest group of battery powered ships is categorized as ‘other activities’, which shows how diverse the maritime industry is and how versatile batteries are on different types of ships.

How to Get Access

The MBF Ship Register is our database of battery powered ships and is only available to MBF members. The data is provided by battery suppliers, integrators, shipyards, and shipowners and maintained by the MBF to create statistics on the adoption of batteries in the maritime industry. All ship types are included in the ship register, except for small leisure boats below 15m. This data is also shared with DNV for the battery statistics on the Alternative Fuels Insight.
