Our History


On the 2nd of April 2014 a group of 15 Norwegian companies and organizations founded the Maritime Battery Forum with the aim to promote new and efficient energy storage technologies in the maritime industry and support the industry with battery-based value creation and accelerate the adoption of green maritime solutions. The founding companies and organizations were: DNVGL, Melina AS, Norwegian Electric Systems, Staalesen Solutions AS, Østensjø Rederi, Anker Defence, University of Oslo, Grenland Energy, Staubo Elektro Maskinas, Kongsberg Maritime, DOF Management, Rolls-Royce Marine, Bellona, Eidesvik AS, ZEM AS

Our Members

A Member Led Non-Profit Organization

The members are companies and public enterprises that engage in maritime transport activities, or are suppliers of goods, services, or R&D, as well as charterers, cargo owners and buyers. Currently we describe our members as maritime battery enablers. These are companies that are at the forefront of making, using, and understanding maritime batteries. From the initial 15 founding members the MBF has grown to more than 70 members in 2023 coming from Europe, North America, and Asia.

Our Commitments


  • The MBF acts as a driver in the development of future industry policy, improves frameworks and incentive models favoring decentralized competence and value creation

  • The MBF organizes meetings and events around the world where government representatives, members, and other invited parties can present and discuss key technical, commercial, regulatory and other issues that are relevant for the further development of maritime battery technology

  • MBF Members have full access to information curated by the MBF on the developments in technology and the opportunity to learn more about the technical and economic aspects of using battery technology on ships and other offshore installations.

  • With vision of a maritime battery future, the MBF’s activities include influencing both businesses and the public sector as buyers to request sustainable, battery based solutions. In addition, influencing stakeholders in banking and finance sector to establish corresponding requirements.
