Estonian State Fleet launches a call for tender for the construction of a battery-powered electric ferry
Riigilaevastik | Estonian State Fleet launches a call for tender for the design and construction of a new, battery-powered electric ferry to serve the main islands in Estonia. Estonian Minister of Infrastructure, Mr Vladimir Svet emphasized that while the new ferry will be similar in size and capacity to the existing operating vessels, it will prove far more cost efficient and environmentally sustainable.
The ferry’s primary power source will be shore-charged green electricity stored in the vessel’s batteries, supported by biodiesel-powered auxiliary generators when needed, particularly during extreme ice conditions.
The new ferry will offer a range of amenities, including a restaurant, shop, and relaxation area for passengers, as well as cabins for the crew. Special attention has been given to ensuring accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility and vision impairments, providing a comfortable and inclusive travel experience for all.
With capacity for up to 500 passengers and around 130 vehicles, the ferry is planned to be the main vessel for the Virtsu-Kuivastu route in Estonia but will also be suitable for the Rohuküla-Heltermaa route when necessary.
The deadline for tender submissions is December 10, 2024.
The project is funded by the European Modernisation Fund and revenues from CO2 emissions trading.
