The MBF supports the development of education on maritime battery systems for crew and officers. Therefore we are happy to announce that the Italian Shipping Academy has joined the Maritime Battery Forum as an observer. The MBF is looking forward to collaborating with the them to provide future officers with the required knowledge on maritime battery systems.
The Fondazione Accademia Italiana della Marina Mercantile (FAIMM), or Italian Shipping Academy, has been founded in 2005 as a private company with a mixed participation of private (49%) and public (51%) entities. Its first goal was to educate and train deck and engine officers in compliance with the STCW, ensuring the highest possible placement of cadets in the labour market. Along the years the Academy widened its scope. In 2011 the private company became a foundation, as requested by a law that created the I.T.S. - Instituti Tecnici Superiori (Higher Technical Institute).
The FAIMM formula perfectly fitted the goals, as it entailed courses alternated with regular enrolment as cadets and long lasting job-training experiences on board. In the last 11 years the foundation widened its education and training scope, opening other courses related to the ship hotellerie sector, the on board leisure and touristic activities, logistic and intramodality, rail technical figures. Since 2008, FAIMM also has an international branch called IMSSEA - International Maritime Safety Security Environment Academy, which acts with foreign customers and delivers training in close cooperation with the IMO Technical Cooperation Division.
The mission of the Academy is to provide specialized training aimed at occupations with a high professional and technological contents, based on the needs of companies in the industry, and in particular in the strategic areas of maritime and logistics. From 2005 to today, the Academy has trained 1048 Officer students in the 52 editions of the ITS Deck classes, and 737 Officer students in the 39 editions of the ITS Machine classes.
FAIMM currently has three venues: the headquarters is based in Genoa and the secondary office is in Arenzano (coastal village west from Genoa), managed in cooperation with Carnival Shipping Company.
