Kongsberg Maritime to supply battery package for training vessel

MBF member Kongsberg Maritime is to supply a 646 kWh SAVe Energy battery system and two hybrid shat generators, as well as power management, propulsion control and monitoring systems to the training vessel, MS Gann. The equipment and simulation package will reduce the vessel’s emissions and enhance the education offered on board.

The training vessel is operated as an upper secondary independent school that educates about 135 students in maritime-focused courses a year. The students live on board the vessel and in that way get training in a real-world maritime environment. Engineering and Industrial Production and Electrical Engineering is part of the school program, in addition to delivering competence-based and statutory courses for the maritime industry. Earlier, the vessel ran passenger services along the Norwegian coast as the Hurtigruten ship MS Narvik before conversion in 2007. During the summer, the vessel offers cruises in Norway and Northern Europe.

Training is important to increase knowledge and prepare to tackle a situation if an incident occurs. The topic for the upcoming member meeting (May 19th) will be battery safety.
