Safety Update - Maritime Battery Incident Database
The MBF Battery Safety JIP is a collaboration between a group of 10 MBF members to increase the knowledge about the safety of maritime battery systems. The first step in improving this knowledge, is to gather information about incidents related to batteries on board of ships. The Maritime Battery Incident Database is the tool which is developed to help us create an overview of incidents with batteries onboard of ships, so that we can all learn from these incidents and prevent similar incidents from happening again.
Because information regarding incidents on board of ships often contains confidential information, we have developed a method to gather information about incidents with batteries on board of ships anonymously. A list of questions has been defined, which can mainly be answered by yes or no. By answering these questions, it is possible to analyse why the incident occurred, what happened and how we can make sure it doesn’t happen again, without being able to tell which ship it was, or what kind of battery system was involved. This way, everyone will be able to learn from incidents, without having to share confidential information.
Now the Maritime Battery Forum needs the help from the industry. We kindly request the everyone within the maritime industry who has been involved in an incident with batteries on board of a ship, to fill in the form below and send it to director@maritimebatteryforum.com.
The incidents do not have to be regarding batteries that are integrated on board of the ship as a part of the propulsion system. We also investigate incidents with batteries that were part of the cargo, or powering auxiliary equipment. Also if batteries did not cause the incident, but made it more difficult to handle the incident, we are interested to hear about it.
