MBF Member Power4Future Provides Battery System for the First Hybrid Vessel Built in the Mediterranean
MBF Member, Power 4 Future alongside parent company FincantieriSi will supply San Giorgiodel Porto (SGDP), a global benchmark shipyard for the repair and conversion of all types of ships, with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for vessel SG116, Chemical/Oil Products Tanker being refitted at PIM shipyards in Piombino, which will become the first hybrid vessel powered by methanol built in the Mediterranean.
The Battery System (BESS) designed and supplied by Fincantieri SI includes a battery system made by the Power4Future (P4F) with a nominal capacity of 1,500 kWh, consisting of 21 modules of lithium batteries type LFP, which ensure high safety on board, a conversion module, the isolation transformer, as well as the Energy Management System (EMS) developed in-house. The supply has a value of about one million euros and will be delivered by the end of 2024.
With this order, Fincantieri SI and San Giorgio del Porto intend to start a collaboration path to make more efficient and sustainable propulsion systems for new ships of the Genoa's historic shipyard.
The innovative propulsion system of the transport vessel SG116 will consist of high-speed engines, in generator configuration, "dual fuel" type, that can be 100% fed by biofuels or methanol, drastically reducing CO2 and NOx emissions.
K-Ships, an independent ship management company with offices in Genoa and Messina, is in charge of the complete project of the SG116, from the classic design (hull modeling, hull, structural stability, systems) to production engineering (cutting plans, block engineering, coordinated deck and machine plans), plus procurement management
