West of England P&I Club, World Leading Mutual Insurance Association for Marine Liabilities joins the Maritime Battery Forum

The Netherlands, 23rd July 2024 –The Maritime Battery Forum is excited to announce that West of England (WEST) P&I Club has joined our global community of maritime battery enablers.

West of England (WEST) is a mutual insurance association and one of the twelve Protection & Indemnity (P&I) Clubs representing the International Group (IG). The Club provides cover for a wide range of marine liabilities, including loss of life, and personal injury to crew, passengers and others onboard, cargo loss and damage, pollution by oil and other hazardous substances, wreck removal, collision and damage to property. Today, the Club provides coverage to over 4800 ships of approx. 100 million GT.

The company has had experience with handling lithium-ion batteries as cargo and in electric vehicles on their members’ ships for years. With the increasing adoption of lithium-ion batteries in various applications on board ships as well as fire incidents involving battery storage systems and electric vehicles at sea, WEST saw the importance of comprehending the risks associated with these evolving technologies. By becoming a part of our global community, WEST is set to acquire knowledge and gain insight about risks, safety standards, and technological advances in the use and carriage of lithium-ion batteries on ships and onshore charging infrastructure.

With battery experts, manufacturers, ship owners, advisors and regulatory bodies that make up the Maritime Battery Forum and are at the forefront of accelerating the adoption of maritime battery technology, the company views collaborating with the forum essential in order to effectively support their members and provide insurance coverage as their members work towards meeting the ambitious target  of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
