Market Report Norway: Opportunities in sustainable ports

What international opportunities does the Norwegian port sector offer for Dutch companies? In 2024, a study was conducted on sustainable ports in Norway, commissioned by the Dutch embassy in Oslo. This report provides an overview of the Norwegian port sector, the opportunities that exist and how you can respond to them.

Due to the vast Norwegian coastline, shipping is crucial to the country. There are no fewer than 3,000 ports in Norway, of all shapes and sizes. About 130 of them are used as shipping ports. In addition to transportation, the ports are also a hub for industry and tourism.

The government, ports and maritime sector promote shipping as an environmentally friendly alternative to road transport. The Norwegian government is investing the equivalent of €3 billion to stimulate and make the sector more sustainable. For example, the CO2 emissions of the port of Oslo must be reduced by 85% by 2030.

Opportunities for Norwegian-Dutch cooperation

As Norwegian ports invest in sustainability, opportunities for cooperation arise for Dutch (port) companies. This report shows how the Norwegian government and the 11 most important ports are tackling sustainability.

Norwegian ports are leaders in shore power. Dutch ports are leaders in alternative fuels, such as hydrogen and ammonia. This offers opportunities for cooperation and knowledge exchange between both countries.
