An update on the updated DNV GL class rules for battery powered vessels

Today we got charged with knowledge on the July 2020 update of the DNV GL class rules for battery powered vessels. There was a great interest to the topic, and more than 70 people had signed up to join the webinar.

The presentation was given by Senior Principal Approval Engineer Sverre Eriksen, followed by a Q&A session. He went through the new requirements. He addressed that the updates that are based on:

  • The fire incident on the battery-powered ferry MF Ytterøyningen

  • The need for route independent calculation and supervision of ESS capacities

  • The knowledge from the battery safety JDP

He specifically wen through the requirements involving the arrangement of battery space, ventilation of battery space, gas detection, fire safety of battery space, battery system design and battery capacity supervision. He emphasized that for closed systems an overpressure is required, whereas for open systems an underpressure with a duct is required. A link to the July 2020 update is included below.

Sverre also talked about the Type Approval Program for Containerized Battery Systems. He mentioned that so far, 18 different battery systems have been typed approved, including various cell chemistries (12 NMC, 5 LFP and 1 LTO).
