The world's largest all-electric ferry is in operation

Bastø Fosen has an electrifying ambition. The shipowner is transforming the fleet of ferries that ply the country’s busiest ferry route to set new standards for clean, efficient and comfortable transportation.

On March 1, the MF Bastø Electric had its first ferry crossing on the fixed route between Moss and Horten, Norway. This happens six years and two weeks after the virgin trip of the world’s first all-electric ferry, MF Ampere. The MF Bastø Electric has a battery capacity of 4300 kWh, which is four times the battery size and almost double the passenger/vehicle capacity compared to MF Ampere. Fast-charging capacity is currently being completed in both Moss and Horten, to provide sufficient energy for MF Bastø Electric and other battery powered ferries to be operating on the same route.

Two diesel-powered sister vessels, Bastø IV and Bastø VI, are being converted to hybrid propulsion. The plan is to bring them into operation in 2022. During 2022, emissions on Norway’s busiest ferry connection will be reduced by 75%. That is equivalent to about 10 000 new petrol cars.
