Equinor - CO2 Saving with use of Shore Power 2020

Our member, Equinor informed their contractual ship owning companies earlier this week about among other increased use of shore power. Below you will find highlights of relevant information from their yearly HSEQ leader seminar.

In 2020, Equinor hired PSVs has been using ashore power for about 20.000 hours and vessels still request more availability of shore power. Some time the shore power station are occupied by others and at some locations it is still not available. Reduced emission is about 5000 t CO2 or equivalent to the emission from 2500 cars yearly.

In 2018, it was only recorded 3000 hours on shore power, so the increase has been significant.

By shore power the noise for vessel crew and harbor neighbors are significantly reduced.

The price for shore power should preferably have been lower, which also Zero addresses in their report.

By lower price of shore power it would have been expected even more extensive use and utilization. Thereby a potential for further CO2 emission reduction.

Shore power is one of many means Equinor Logistic and support dept. use to reduce CO2 emission from their hired vessels.

Even more interesting is Equinor’s Contract demands.

Mid term 2021:

  • Fuel figures from Maress (delivered by our member, Yxney Maritime)

  • Propeller cleaning

  • Hull cleaning mid term contract

  • Shore power at midterm of contract

  • Fuel incentive.

Long term contracts;

  • Battery / Hybridization

  • Low / zero emission vessel solutions (Bio fuel, hydrogen, ammonia etc. combustion engines or fuel cells)
