Öresundslinjen joins the Maritime Battery Forum

The Maritime Battery Forum is excited to announce that Öresundslinjen has taken the leap to become a member of our global community of maritime battery enablers! Öresundslinjen sails between Helsingbor and Helsingör which continues to be the shortest and fastest way to cross the strait between the two cities.

With five vessels and in all weather conditions, Öresundlinjen sails the four kilometers between Helsingborg and Helsingör around the clock, every 20 minutes with passengers, cars, busses and trucks. In 2023, with an average of 142 crossings per day, 6.1 million passengers, 1.0 millioncars, 457,000 trucks and 7,400 buses used Öresundslinjen!

Perhaps the most laudable accomplishment is that the company is not only the most efficient transport option, but also the most sustainable ferry connection. In 2014, Öresundslinjen started an investigation to see if it was possible to operate on this intense ferry route on batteries. The conversion of the first two vessels from diesel electric to battery propulsion was finalized in 2017 and the second vessel in 2018.

The group also works continuously to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and reduce the ferry connection’s impact on the marine environment for the benefit of the Öresund region. From 2007, the ferries that operate the crossing were the first to meet the requirements of the SECA emission regulations, which became mandatory in 2015. Having two electric ferries (Tycho, Brahe and Aurora) out of five and one planned for electric operation in 2025, the goal to have an emission-free fleet powered by batteries before 2030 is achievable!

The company hopes to establish contacts within the maritime battery industry (manufacturers, integrators, users), acquire more knowledge and expand their business. Our global community will in fact, benefit largely from their wealth of experience operating on batteries, their commitment to zero emissions and their lessons learned.
